Primary school (nursery and elementary) is divided into three cycles:

• Cycle 1 or the foundation cycle (cycle des apprentissages)

• Cycle 2 (cycle des apprentissages fondamentaux )

• Cycle 3 cycle (des approfondissements)

Primary teachers are accredited by the French Ministry of Education or hold a University degree.

Secondary school (middle and upper) continues for 7 more years, the equivalent of grades 6 through 12. Graduating students are awarded the Baccaluareate diploma. Starting from September 2006, a new French-Cypriot program with full time instruction will be added for the 6^th grade.

The 9^th to 12^th grade is currently a correspondence based program by the CNED (the French distance learning program). Pupils must attend class and are assisted by teachers.
